Ten Disciples of Buddha
The final ten figures on the lower portion of the rotunda wall depict the historical disciples of
Sakyaumuni. All are shown as monks, with shaven heads, drawn faces, and simple garments. The ten
disciples were Mognyon, Kajonyon, Subori, Upari, Ananda, Saribul, Kasop, Puruna, Anayul, and
Rahura. While this much is known, however, the assignment of names to individual carvings is much
more speculative. All of these figures are approximately 2 meters high.
The Arhats or Ten Disciples of the Buddha circle the main rotunda. Each figure is unique but it is
difficult to identify them. They have Indian bone structure and facial features, and each wears a
monk's robe and shoes.
Each disciple is said to possess a unique magical power or gift, symbolized by the things in their
hands and posture. Some carry incense holders, suggesting they are making an offering to the
Buddha; others hold their hands in a meditative gesture or clasp the edge of their robes as if they are
speaking to a crowd.
