Deva and Boddhisattva Images

Inside of the pillars, the first four carvings on the rotunda wall are of attendant devas and boddhisattvas. The first two, Taebom Ch'onwang and Chyesok Ch'onwang, are Hindu gods become followers of Buddha. They carry items reflective of their origins: one holds a whisk and a bottle, while the other holds a whisk and the stylized thunderbolt (Skt. vajra) prevalent in South Asian art. These figures both have mandalas framing their heads. Next come two boddhisattvas attendant on the central Buddha, Pohyon Boddhisattva and Munsu Boddhisattva. All four are depicted with complex, flowing garments and very feminine ' features.
